Other Activities / GMC Charity Event
« on: January 19, 2011, 06:14:51 PM »

I got this email from someone at the GMC, it sounded interesting. Anyone?

James, I found your details on the Vertical Marathon webpage.  Excellent effort. Im the charity coordinator from the GMC, we use Craggy and the Surrey Sport Park wall regularly so some of our members have probably crossed lines at some point. Were looking to put an event together in Guildford to raise money for our charity, the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation and wondered if some of the members of the Surrey Uni climbing club would be interested in coming along to support it.

Its all provisional on getting a suitable venue for free on a suitable date but Ive got commitment from Neil Gresham to come down to Guildford to give a slide show.  Hes not charging so he will include some marketing of his coaching business Im sure but it should be interesting.
Were looking at one evening on the week of 21-27 Feb, hopefully in the Surrey Sport Park.  Were going to charge 10 per head to GMC and Uni Club members (no further discounts). If we have space in the venue well offer them at Craggy and the wall for 15.  Let me know and Ill let you have firm dates and venues when theyre sorted. Cheers Richard CarratuPhone: +44 (0) 7770 670 370

Social Events / James' leaving drinks
« on: June 06, 2010, 01:26:31 PM »
So I'm off t'up Norf a few days after my viva (18th) and thought it'd be fun to see everyone before I shot off to commence world domination/millionaire making.

As some of you know, I'm moving to Heywood in Lancashire, just north of Manchester to start work for a small electronics/mechanical engineering company that make viscometers.

So how does the 15th or 16th sound? In the evening in town somewhere for dinner then drinks in a pub?

It won't be goodbye forever though, there're >70 crags within 15 miles of my new house and you're all welcome to visit, and apparently I have to come back to visit Jess :p.

Who's up for it? When's best and where should we go? I'm impartial as long as they serve ale.

Does anyone remember in 2009 summer font we played a massive game of skipping with that rope.

Has anyone seen a picture of it around?

Other Activities / Helping a local school
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:30:20 PM »
I just got this email through the university, anyone want to come with me?

This Saturday (27th February),  Weyfield Primary School needs volunteers to continue to clear their overgrown pond area, replace the pond lining, put up a shed and many other tasks. No skills are required just an enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in. You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothes. The school will be open from 9.30 am until 1.30 pm so if you can spare a few minutes/hours please pop in - the more the merrier!

There is lots of free cake and tea apparently.

Other Activities / Label printing?
« on: January 26, 2010, 10:34:23 AM »
Does anyone have access to sheets of labels and a printer? I need some labels to stick in the club books, will need about 100 labels in total. Anyone think their work wouldn't notice if they ran off a few?

We need the following text on the labels:
University of Surrey Mountaineering Club
Union House, Stag Hill
University of Surrey
Guildford, Surrey, GU2 7XH

Bullshit and Random Banter / Lecturers setting a good example:
« on: January 12, 2010, 11:51:30 AM »
Here is a recent email from Madeline McGower, the university's PR officer:

Please would all students take note of the very high level of danger attached to walking on the lake ice. There have been numerous fatalities reported in the press in recent days as people have fallen through lake ice and become trapped underneath it. The danger is exacerbated by the slight thaw we have experienced resulting in a thinning of the ice. Notices have been posted by the Lake to warn all staff and students of the danger PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES

Here is one of our much loved club members, setting a good example by disregarding her advice, but doing it safely!

This is why your nickname is Dr Danger, never EVER refute it again. :D

Geek Talk / Gauge your geekyness?

This article on lifehacker is for the 61 greatest free bits of software. It'd make a good gauge of how geeky you are.

So how many of these have you installed and/or installed.

I get 19.

« on: November 17, 2009, 10:55:09 AM »
Anyone available from 5pm today? Unisport will have a photographer there to take some photos for their new marketing materials and Chalkie wants to know if anyone's available to be photographed climbing.

Have emailed him the link to this thread so he knows if anyone replies that they can go. I shall be there.

Other Activities / Vertex Route Setting - Saturday 28th November
« on: November 05, 2009, 03:31:42 PM »
Being limited to weekend's we're not on trips for, we'll be resetting the vertex on Saturday 28th November.

For anyone that's not done it before, it's usually a bit of hard work but you'll get the chance to strip off all the dirty holds, give them a quick wash then put them back up in new and more interesting ways. Is usually quite satisfying.

There will be PIZZA and SQUASH provided (if we can find someone on campus willing to let us use their oven).

Please post if you can make it to help, the more people the better:
Adam Wade
Becky W
Novelty (if his plans for world retail domination fall through)

Does anyone have a pressure washer we can borrow please?

This will be the last time it'll be reset before the new centre opens in March, as such I think we're going to do ALL of it, the walls and squash court.

Social Events / Geocaching?
« on: November 04, 2009, 09:49:31 AM »
Would anyone like to get out for a walk one weekend we're not going climbing and find some geocaches? There are loads in the countryside around Guildford, we could plan a cycle/walk that took us to 15 or so of them in a day.

Other Activities / static/ab rope
« on: October 29, 2009, 09:32:09 PM »
Does the club have one?

If not does anyone else have one I might possibly be able to borrow this weekend?
