COLLECTING VM SPONSORSHIP
« on: April 21, 2010, 07:40:14 PM »
Hello all,

I would like to encourage you all to use the JustGiving page as far as possible for donating money. However, you can pay cash, or cheques payable to "University of Surrey Students Union" to me.

This must be done by the 5th of may

Chris.

Just to clarify. If giving me a pile of cash/Cheques. This amount should equal what is written in the total column of the sponsorship form. All filled out, with Gift Aid ticked if possible. So not include Online donations in the total. If money needs to be collected after the event; I do not want to see you until you have it all. (Unless exception such as company gift matching etc, in which case make a note on the form)

Money collected so far:
Elly Pryce
Jon Skinner
Marc Griffiths
Laura Ede

All done online:
James
Chris K
Tom

With offline payments; ideally pay them into your bank account, and add it online to the JustGiving :)
Before you put on a frown, make absolutely sure there are no smiles available! :D

You're kidding?  That's not in any way tax efficient, most students are not able to gift aid, most sponsors will be and it costs a fortune in fees.

You are also not allowed to tick the gift aid button if the money has been given to you to then give to a charity

Surely, if you're accounting for individuals viability to give gift aid etc etc, we will have to deal with every person that's donated seperately? Also VERY inefficient?
What's a better plan then?

I assumed people pay the club what they raised offline,. the club write one cheque to whoever it goes to, and then send off all the accompaying sponsor forms to whoever they go to to reclaim the gift aid (HMRC?), so they can work out how much to add on?

I'd expect you to do about as much as Elly said, except you just send all the details to MR and leave them to sort out gift aid, it's another 28.2%.

thats the same for my work - It took them over a month just to confirm that they would match the money I raise through work!

Last time we just gave cash to people organising. Much simpler.

Thats the system this time. I don't understand how giving it to me is any more complicated than giving it to Weeman?

If the money is coming from someone that pays uk income tax the charity can claim back the tax which is worth nearly 30% so it's worth donating correctly.  It's much easier if you can get people to donate through the just Giving website.

You can donate on the JustGiving website - press 'Give Gift Aid'

You can give me a cheque - To claim give aid this must also have a form with everyones addresses on it, and the gift aid box ticked.

Simple. Any issues, get over it.

I was told before that cheques could be made out to Mountain rescue, so have one for 20 from my aunt.  Is this ok or not?

that might partly be because your deadline is too tight. Most of my money is coming from work - no-one had any cash last week as it was nearly pay day. Only gives me tomorrow and Wed to collect it. Can you extend your deadline please. Those of us who work need weekdays to give us the opportunity to collect.
